THE IDEA OF MEDITERRANEAN SPIRIT

Painting directly from nature in many Mediterranean countries, I watched daily life and character traits of the peoples living there, delving into their history and mythological world. Variety of experiences was not unexpected. More surprising was the commonality found in various characteristics that united the national, religious, and ethnic diversity of the Mediterranean region.

My understanding of the geography of "Mediterranean" is much broader – "from Gibraltar to Gibraltar": the entire coastline from Morocco to Colchis along the northern Africa-Asia and back to Spain across the south of Europe. Thus, in this zone, except the Mediterranean, Aegean, Adriatic, and Black Sea can be included all other islands and seas within the designated configuration. I could notice visibly demonstrative intersection of cultures: Egyptian, Mycenaean, Jewish, Hellenistic, Scythian, Roman, Dalmatian, Islamic, Moorish and many others. Evolving from different roots, eventually they became irretrievably intertwined into new forms, and then crossed again . Such examples are endless. Another interesting fact is that this zonal community remains mainly within the coastal areas, say, Azure coast of France, Venice or Dolmatia - is one thing, but the area near the French and Italian Alps, is quite different region, as far as in visual images and spiritual essence. Studying the problem empirically, from the perspective of the artist and with the artistic touches, I have come to realize the fact of the the oneness of all the diverse areas of the Mediterranean, which comes out not only in historical, mythological and cultural planes, but also, what is especially true now, in the economic sphere.

If we assume that the vast Mediterranean space, with it’s inner similarities, resembles a state, then where would be its capital I think it is Cyprus – the intersection of all the geographical and economic areas and religions. Besides, Aphrodite was born there.

Mediterranean. In its saturated with the sunshine and color spaces formed my own innovated concept of neo-impressionism presented as the purest reproduction of sensations of nature without its rational re-recoding. The artist concentrates the fluid flows of nature and they remain on canvas as fossilized paint, taking into the realm of frozen centuries the magic copulation of the world and the artist’s soul. This direct perception without looking at the background gradually developed into the concept of "painting", and then into the notion of "art." It has become a way of life of a free man.

Obviously, because of its positive energy the paintings of Mediterranean epic proved very popular. In the organization of my numerous creative journeys I got assistance form the companies such as Mercedes-Benz, KYI AVIA, UIA and a number of individuals. This helped me with a number of lengthy creative trips to Greece, Croatia, Venice, Malta and Cyprus. The resulted paintings then easily found their place in private collections, the largest of which is in Bulgaria at the residence of Mr. Ognian Bazarov (over 100 works). It was completed with the album that summarized all – «The idea of Mediterranean spirit or The Neo-impressionism of Anatoly Tartakovsky".
